A Quiet Place (2018)

An intriguing narrative that cleverly understands how the horror genre works, we are forced to watch this film through the characters perspective and truly imagine what it would be like to not make any noise. Whilst watching my body was rigid and tense and I did not utter a sound, I felt so invested in the story that I felt like it was happening around me.

‘A Quiet Place’ (2018) is set in a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.

Everything about the narrative itself is scary, not being able to make ANY noise whatsoever or you die and this film did not avoid any opportunities. We are jumped from tragedy to tragedy, the narrative does not stop for breathe. The tension and anticipation is constant and I was never unsatisfied, this film is as realistic as it can get.

Every scene feels real and that is all down to the fantastic cast, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski really outdo themselves. Of course, their chemistry on screen is natural but they are both so watchable. I have honestly never been a fan of Blunt, but this performance has changed my opinions of her as an actress, she is believable as the mother and really invests herself into the emotional portrayal.

A QUIET PLACE

No question is left unanswered and I really appreciated that, it was obvious how much time and effort had gone into the screenplay and it really showed. I was concentrating on every detail, seeing if anything did not feel right but no…everything was spot on. Every detail was considered and that to me is real filmmaking, making your audiences believe everything that’s happening and consider that it could be like that one day. I felt like I was putting myself in their position, holding my breath at a tense moment of even trying not to eat loudly. I was so invested in this film and to me that made it even more enjoyable to watch the first and even the second time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film from start to finish, it was not predictable like your conventional horror/thriller movie it was far from it. I felt like anything could happen at any moment because it was real life! No character felt safe, whereas in your horror movie you know that the last girl will be standing at the end. I felt completely vulnerable watching this film because I had no idea what was going to happen, normally I’m pretty spot on with predictions but this film let me just enjoy the unknown.

Overall, this movie has really impressed me. Every moment felt so raw and realistic to me, I thoroughly enjoyed letting myself go and really allowing myself to feel like I was apart of the narrative. I hope they don’t make a second one but shamefully I would watch it!
